"Work Out Your Salvation" What (Work) Must I Do To Be Saved?

Cult groups and Christians alike often wonder how much "work" is needed to be counted as righteous before God. They often ask us this question.

Groups like the Jehovah's Witnesses with their endless meetings, door to door ministry, placing their magazines and counting meticulously all the time they spend in these pursuits and efforts, believe that somehow God will approve of their efforts and reward them. They can never be certain that they have "done enough" and always feel driven to do more.

Mormons, (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) likewise have their "works"--temple ceremonies, wearing special garments, avoiding certain foods or drinks, tithing, temple worthiness pursuits, researching and being baptized in proxy for their ancestors and others, and missionary stints for their young people. They believe these efforts will bring God's approval and a higher state of salvation. Their works are ongoing as well right up to death.
Seventh-day Adventists with their meatless diets, worshiping on the "sabbath" avoiding all work on certain days, wearing certain clothes, avoiding jewelry etc. are also on a works trip to try and impress God.

In many Christian churches we still find many rules and requirements for one to be a "good" Christian. Those that don't fit the mold set by the denomination are looked down upon.

Many people partially quote the scripture Philippians 2: 11-13 and threaten you to "....work out you own salvation with fear and trembling." and advise you to "get to work" They fail to finish the quote that assures us that "God is at work in us".

So, does our salvation depend on our good works and good deeds?

If so, how many, how much, and how do I know the quota I have to reach?

What if I don't quite make it? Am I then lost? Do I have no hope of salvation?

The following is just a very brief overview of this subject but will give the reader an introduction into the topic people raise about "grace and works".

First off, regarding Salvation we can be assured through Scripture that we are saved due entirely to Christ's grace. The Greek word for "grace" means "unmerited favor", that is, a "gift" given freely with no restrictions. We cannot "earn" grace.

"For by grace you have been saved (past tense) through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works that no one should boast." (Eph. 2: 8,9 ).

There are many other scriptures saying the same thing, so the point is made, we are saved by grace alone and there is no way we can work for it.

However, being human in a "works"-oriented world, we think we must work endlessly to try and earn our way with God. Even Jesus' disciples wondered and asked Him,
"They said therefore to Him, "What shall we do, that we may work the works of God? Jesus answered and said to them,
"This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent". (John 6:28,29).

Wow, what an answer--the work of God is to believe in Jesus Christ, who will then extend salvation to us as a free gift if we but receive Him as our Savior, repent, and invite Him into our lives (John 1:12,13).

So what about all the scriptures about works? They are all related to the subject of faith, not salvation.

There will be good works in our lives IF we have the indwelling Christ.

Works are a RESULT of salvation,
not a CONDITION for it.

When Christ is in your life, you just can't stop talking about what He has done for you, and because of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, it will be no chore to read and study the Bible, help others, and share the message of salvation.
Works cause our FAITH to grow, not our salvation! "Faith without works is dead"--a scripture always misapplied by JW's to get you to "work out your own salvation", when salvation is not the topic, FAITH is!

We will get rewards from God based on our godly works--these will be a wonderful bonus to our salvation. We'll only know the extent of the "crowns" or "rewards" when we finally get to be with Christ . These are in addition to our free gift of salvation. How wonderful it will be to hear Him say "Well done, thy good and faithful servant"!
The goal is to have a real relationship with God in this life and for eternity after death!

The gospel message is simple: Believe and receive, doubt and go without! God has freely given His salvation by grace to all who would repent and believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior. Jesus Christ is Almighty God manifest in the flesh, (John 1:1-14) and Jesus Himself said, "Unless you believe that I AM you will die in your sins" (John 8:24).

The cults have not only presented a counterfeit "salvation", but also a counterfeit "Jesus". Find your way to the real Jesus and you will enjoy real salvation, and incidentally, because you are saved, real satisfying "works" that will build your faith. You will then be in the company of all believers through the ages who can confidentially declare that they "know they have eternal life".(1 John 5: 11-15).

WHAT DOES GOD GIVE US WHEN WE RECEIVE CHRIST AS OUR SAVIOUR?

1. We become sons of God. “But as many received Him to them He gave power to
become the sons of God.” John 1:12. This means....

2. We get born again. “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of
God.” John 3:3. “Ye must be born again.” John 3:7. We were born many years ago
physically into our parent’s family. When we receive Christ as our Saviour, we are
adopted or born into God’s family as His sons, with full rights to all the privileges of
being in God’s family (Romans 8:15).

3. We are saved from the penalty of sin, which is hell, and the Lake of Fire.
We are saved from the power of sin as we yield obediently to Christ’s Word.
We are saved from the presence of sin when we get to heaven. “For whosoever…”
Romans 10:13

4. We get eternal life, living with God forever. “He that has the Son, has life.” I John
5:12.

5. We are reconciled to God by the death of Christ. Romans 5:10. God has removed
the barrier of sin, producing peace between God and us.

6. “We are justified by faith in Jesus Christ as our Saviour.” Romans 5:1.
This means that we are declared righteous, pardoned and all our sins are removed.
We are entitled to all of God’s promised blessings. It is just as if we had never sinned.

7. We are 100% acceptable to God because of Jesus Christ. We do not need to perform
perfectly in order to win God’s acceptance. “He has made us acceptable in the
beloved (Christ).” Eph. 1:6.

8. “We are forgiven all trespasses.” Colossians 2:13. Forgiveness is the legal act of God
where He removes all the charges held against a sinner because Christ has made
proper payment for his sins.

9. We are redeemed. This means that we are bought by Christ out of the slave market of
sin, set free from sin’s bondage, we now belong to Christ, and we are Christ’s servants
to do God’s will. We are not to live a life of selfish ease, but to be useful to God’s
purposes.
“...ye are not your own. For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your
body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” I Corinthians 6:19,20.

10. We are indwelt and led by the Holy Spirit. God’s Spirit now lives in us permanently.
We must not disobey His leading.” If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none
of His.” Romans 8:9. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of
God.” Romans 8:14.

11. We will receive a new, young resurrected body that will never die. Romans 8:11.
“His flesh shall be fresher than a child’s: he shall return to the days of his youth.” Job
33:25.
“This mortal must put on immortality.” I Corinthians 15:53.

12. We are new creatures with a new Divine nature.
“If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature....all things are become new.” II
Corinthians 5:17.

13. God gives us many exceeding great and precious promises in the Bible for us to
claim to guide and help us in life. By these we become partakers of the Divine nature.
II Peter 1:4.

14. God has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the
knowledge of him that has called us to glory (in heaven) and virtue (now). II Peter
1:3.

15. Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:1. “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you.” John 14:27. “Peace
of God.” Philippians 4:7.

16. We are servants of God. “Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ.” Romans 1:1.
“....being made free from sin, and become servants to God.” Romans 6:22.

17. We are ambassadors for Christ. II Corinthians 5:20. We are God’s representatives
on earth with God’s message of salvation to mankind.

18. We are given many Christian brothers and sisters to help and care for us.
“A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another as I have loved you.”
John 13:43

19. We have a home and mansion in heaven. II Corinthians 5:1,8.
“In my Father’s house are many mansions.....I go to prepare a place for you.” John
14:2.

20. We are now friends of God. “I have called you friends”. John 15:15.
“Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” John 15:14.

21. We can lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven which we cannot lose. Matthew 7:20.

Eternal Security (Eternal life) -tolerate sin?

1. Salvation is in Christ alone-we just plainly RECEIVED IT BY REAL AND SINCERE REPENTANCE AND FAITH IN CHRIST ALONE.

*[[Joh 14:6]] KJV* Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

*[[Act 4:12]] KJV* Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

*[[Joh 1:12-13/KJV]]* %v 12% But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: %v 13% Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

*[[Joh 3:16-18/KJV]]* %v 16% For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. %v 17% For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. %v 18% He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

*[[Mar 1:14-15/KJV]]* %v 14% Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, %v 15% And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

2. We in our effort can not MAINTAIN it. It is CHRIST THAT WILL ENSURE WE ARE SAVED TO THE END. HE AND THE FATHER HOLDS US. OUR TWO NATURES PLAYS THE RULE AND HOW WE DECIDE. WE SIN BECAUSE OF THE OLD NATURE.

*[[Phi 1:6]] KJV* Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

*[[1Co 1:8-9/KJV]]* %v 8% Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. %v 9% God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

*[[Joh 10:28-29/KJV]]* %v 28% And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. %v 29% My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

*[[Eph 1:13-14/KJV]]* %v 13% In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, %v 14% Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

*[[Rom 8:1]] KJV* There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

*[[Joh 3:36]] KJV* He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

*[[Rom 8:35-39/KJV]]* %v 35% Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? %v 36% As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. %v 37% Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. %v 38% For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, %v 39% Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1Th 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jude 1:1 Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:

1Pe 1:4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

3. THE TRULY SAVED AND THE FAKE. SIN OF THE SAVED OLD NATURE,  OR SIN BECAUSE HE NEVER ACTUALLY SINCERELY RECEIVED CHRIST AS SAVIOR AND TRUST OTHER MEANS LIKE GOOD WORKS, ETC.  AND IS FAKE.

A. Fake SALVATION is salvation not in Christ alone but by good works or personal merit.
Good works is after SALVATION and is the proof that you have been saved.

1Jn 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

Titus 1:16, "They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed."

1 John 1:6, "If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth."

1 John 2:4, "The one who says, 'I have come to know Him,' and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him."

1 John 4:20, "If someone says, 'I love God,' and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen."

Salvation is never by our Works but by Jesus in the Cross. Fake SALVATION is by personal works.

*[[Rom 4:2-7/KJV]]* %v 2% For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. %v 3% For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. %v 4% Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. %v 5% But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. %v 6% Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, %v 7% Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

*[[Rom 11:6]] KJV* And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

*[[Gal 2:16]] KJV* Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

*[[Eph 2:9]] KJV* Not of works, lest any man should boast.

*[[Eph 2:9]] KJV* Not of works, lest any man should boast.

B. SALVATION is never a Reward  but  a gift. Those who Who are saved can still sin in the body, in the old nature.

*[[Rom 7:18-20/KJV]]* %v 18% For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. %v 19% For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. %v 20% Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

*[[Rom 7:23-25/KJV]]* %v 23% But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. %v 24% O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? %v 25% I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

*[[1Jn 1:8-10/KJV]]* %v 8% If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. %v 9% If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. %v 10% If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Psa 51:12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
St Peter: *[[Mar 14:70-72/KJV]]* %v 70% And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto. %v 71% But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak. %v 72% And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.

4.CAN THE ETERNALLY SAVED ABUSE it.

They may try but the CONSEQUENCES is so high and may cause pain and physical distruction and discipline and lose the Joy of SALVATION.

Psa 51:12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

5. DOES GOD TOLERATE SIN OF THE ETERNALLY SAVED?  WHAT'S THE CONSEQUENCES THAT WE FEAR TO SIN.
NEVER DOES GOD TOLERATES SIN. IT IS THE CAUSE OF HIS DEATH AND SACRIFICE. TO THE SAVED HE PURIFIES THEM WITH HIS BLOODAND WITH DISCIPLINE OF THE BODY TO TRAIN US TO BE DISCPLINED.

"CHASTEN" verb
- To punish (in order to bring about improvement in behavior, attitude, etc.); to restrain, moderate
- To make chaste; to purify.
- To punish or reprimand for the sake of improvement; to discipline.
- To render humble or restrained.

*[[Psa 89:30-35/KJV]]* %v 30% If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; %v 31% If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; %v 32% Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. %v 33% Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. %v 34% My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. %v 35% Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.

*[[2Sa 7:14]] KJV* I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:

*[[Heb 12:5-11/KJV]]* %v 5% And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: %v 6% For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. %v 7% If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? %v 8% But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. %v 9% Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? %v 10% For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. %v 11% Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

*[[Job 5:17]] KJV* Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

*[[Pro 3:11-12/KJV]]* %v 11% My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: %v 12% For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

*[[Rev 3:19]] KJV* As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

6. IF(HYPOTHETICAL)  SALVATION CAN BE LOST, CAN IT BE EVER RESTORED?

*[[Heb 6:4-6/KJV]]* %v 4% For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, %v 5% And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, %v 6% If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

7. CAN A MAN BORN BE UNBORN? NEVER!
